Press brake forming requires careful attention to material properties, tooling selection, and bend sequencing. Here's what engineers need to know for precision metal folding projects.

Understanding Bend Allowance

Bend allowance is the length of the neutral axis through the bend zone and determines the final flat pattern dimensions. Accurate bend allowance calculations are essential for parts that must fit precisely. The K-factor, typically between 0.3 and 0.5 depending on material and bend radius, determines where the neutral axis sits within the material thickness.

Standard Metal Folding Tolerances

CNC press brakes typically achieve angular accuracy of ±0.5°, flange length accuracy of ±0.25mm, and backgauge repeatability of ±0.05mm. These tolerances are achievable with proper tooling selection and material consistency. Tighter tolerances are possible with dedicated tooling and controlled material batches.

Design Best Practices

Minimum flange length should be at least 4× material thickness to ensure the press brake can grip the part reliably. Bend relief notches should be added at the intersection of bends to prevent tearing. Consistent bend radii simplify tooling setup and reduce changeover time. Inside bend radius should typically be at least 1× material thickness for cold-rolled steel.

Springback Compensation

All metals spring back after bending — the press brake must over-bend to achieve the target angle. CNC press brakes with automatic springback compensation adjust for material type, thickness, and grain direction. Consistent material from the same supplier reduces springback variation between batches.
